Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader Movie Review

Was Disney wise to pass on the 3rd Narnia film? The answer is probably yes! If a kids film bores an adult, then kids must be twitching in their seats. The story is altered greatly from the books, and they do realise when it gets boring as it switches to an action scene very abruptly. As a whole though the film just trudges, nothing really memorable, the kid actors are just as annoying. We also passed on 3D, saving £5, as this is another conversion job, and refuse to play for another dodgy conversion. Overall very underwhelming.

Megamind 3D Movie Review

Neither of us can usually stand Will Ferrell, but as you can't actually see him being annoying on screen, we decided to give this a chance. We're glad we did, as this is actually a very good film of good vs. evil, love and deception. All the voices fit the characters perfectly and the animation is getting close to Pixar levels. The 3D is also very good, with many scenes obviously using the medium well with things finally popping out of the screen rather than just the usual depth. The story is also good and very touching, with lots of chuckles along the way.

Love Never Dies Theatre Review

The lady in charge of the theatre in Paris has now moved to Coney Island, New York and has continued to be haunted by the Phantom for the past 10 years. The existing leading lady is about to be discovered when Christine is invited by the Phantom to come over from Paris and lead his New York show instead. Sexual tension, drunken husbands, jealousy and a child's parentage come under fire for the whole musical. The music itself, while good, doesn't quite reach the dramatic heights or forcefulness of the original, however there are some good numbers such as "Beauty Underneath" and of course "Love Never Dies". The singing however is something else, with Christine and Phantom both delivering some walloping voices! The scenery is sometimes basic, sometimes very ellaborate, with clever use of projection between scene changes. Overall very good, but doesn't quite match the original.

P.S. Note to the Adelphi Theatre and others in London, its nearly the 2nd decade of the 21st century and you really need to increase the leg room on your seats!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 Movie Review

We'd sort of given up with Harry Potter. Not readers of the books, and not having enjoyed the 6th film with its overly serious tone, we were hoping this film would pick up on the action front and wrap the series up. How wrong we were! With a good opener escaping Potter's house via broomstick, the film very rapidly goes down hill. They seem to spend the next 2 hours sitting round in a tent in a field and occasionally moving to another field every time they get discovered. Hermoine seems to do all the magic yet again, when is Harry going to do something? The baddies start gathering towards the end of the film, and you think finally, but then the credits roll and you have to wait until July 2011!!! Completely boring!

Skyline Movie Review

We went to see this film blind, had no idea what it was about at all. It had great effects, good suspense and kept the pace going fairly well. However we had no real idea where the story was going or how it ended. Yes its about aliens abducting humans, but it didn't make it clear why they were doing it. Even with a piece that looks tacked on at the end, we still didn't know why!! When films end like this they normally leave you thinking up the ending and using your imagination, but this just leaves you feeling confused!

Due Date Movie Review

It has someone form the Hangover in it, it's trying to be the Hangover, but it just doesn't get there. In fact its probably not even quite as funny at the other Hangover wannabe, Hot Tub Time Machine. It also borrows quite heavily from Trains, Planes and Automobiles, and is basically a road trip across America where anything and everything that could go wrong does, all to get to the hospital in time for the birth of Downey Jr.'s first child. There are several chuckle moments and Galifianakis plays his usual strange and bizarre role, but doesn't pull off Hangover levels of comedy.

Unstoppable Movie Review

Free courtesy of Sky Movies and previewed way before its 24th Nov release date, we got to see Unstoppable. The story of a runaway train doesn't exactly sound riveting, but somehow they manage to keep the tension going throughout the entire film. With Washington and Pine at odds of younger union workers taking the older ones jobs and not really getting along, it takes a runaway 1,000,000 tonne train loaded with 8 trailers of highly explosive and highly toxic chemicals to get them to co-operate. Great thriller with some real edge of the seat nail biting moments.

Vampires Suck Movie Reviews

Vampires Suck is a spoof of all things vampire, well Twilight at least. Theres loads of other vampire things it could have spoofed old and new like Buffy, Angel, True Blood, Vampire Diaries and many more, but instead it sticks steadily to Twilight, following the story of New Moon. This in itself is unfortunate as its a boring story and soon runs in to the same dead end story. It does provide a few chuckles, but rapidly runs out of steam.

Devil Movie Review

As it has stayed grey we headed to Sawgrass Mall and cinema to see Devil, written and produced by M. Night Shamallamalinlang, but not directed by him for a change! Which is a shame, as it was actually quite good! Set in a lift, the devil decides to turn up a reap all the naughty peoples souls, who also just happen to be in the same lift. Some good twist 'n turns, lights flickering, mystery and deaths. However there is the usual film, film, film, obvious glaring plot point, film, film, film, film, film, back to obvious plot point which you are supposed to be surprised at! However it did take a lengthly flash back and for someone to say the obvious out loud in the film for the American audience to literally gasp out loud and finally realise what you knew about an hour ago! Miles better than Last Air Bender and certainly leaps above Lady in the Water.

R.E.D. Movie Review

Retired and Extremely Dangerous (RED) is a film about retired CIA, MI6 and KGB agents who come out of retirement for one last mission. All the actors, Willis, Freeman, Mirren and Malkovich are extremely believable and very comfortable in their roles. The film is very light hearted, with good action pieces and the story moves along at a nice pace. We thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Miami Art Deco at Night

After dinner we took in the sights of Miami Beach at night. All along Ocean Boulevard the art deco style buildings were lit up in neon.

Miami Duck Tour

Today we boarded a giant bus/boat contraption called a Duck Tour. We drove down Collins Avenue and Miami Causeway where numerous films and TV shows were filmed including Miami Ink and Bad Boys. We then literally drove off the edge of Miami dock, plopped into the water and started our boat tour round the harbour! Very similar route to the speedboat yesterday, but speedboat was more fun!

Miami Thriller Speedboat

After a morning of laying in the sun, we headed round to Miami Harbor and the shops at Bayside to go on a trip on the Miami Thriller! A huge 1000bhp speedboat capable of carrying 35 passengers at over 50mph while leaving a huge jet stream in the water behind us!

As well as the huge speed boost, we also slowed down to see Star Island, where surprisingly stars live, such as Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and the man who invented viagra! Mr. Viagra lives very comfy in his $75 million mansion!

Resident Evil Afterlife 3D Movie Review

Milla Jovovich resumes her role as Alice in the often critic slated Resident Evil series, but we continue to enjoy the series! This time the film is filmed in 3D using the Avatar cameras, none of this 2D to 3D conversion, but you have to ask yourself why they bothered? Nothing really 3D happens in the film, they don't even use it to throw zombies at you. The story itself continues on from RE3 with Alice's clones infiltrating Umbrella Corp. Tokyo, they then reset the story by taking her powers and killing all the clones, and the for the rest of the film end up in a prison setting trying the get to the legendary safe haven of Arcadia. Unfortunately the setting, like the openess of the third, is dull, and you never really feel at threat from the T-virus. Combined with disappointing 3D the series is running out of ideas, even though they have left it wide open for RE5!

Sorcerer's Apprentice Movie Review

A movie based off the broom cleaning scene in Fantasia is a pretty flimsy start to a premise for an entire film! However they do manage to dig out a fairly decent plot about Merlin's ultimate apprentice and Nic Cage's journey to find him. The geeky school nerd is the apprentice and it goes on from there with him learning his new trade. Some good scenes and good effects, but the story never really gets going and just leaves the film at average status.

Expendables Movie Review

Wanna see a movie with washed up, slightly over the hill film stars, who all look too old, use too many steroids and lip filler? Then Expendables is it! None of the stars really shine, and even Statham and Li don't really get to do too much of their trademark fighting. In fact the whole film was just one huge meh! After such a build up, a film containing all your favourite action stars from yester-year, apart from a noteably absent Van Damme, you'd think they'd spend a little more time on the story, which basically is they go after a bad guy blowing, shooting and chopping lots of things up along the way. We enjoyed Rambo 4 and A-Team, which were similar revivals and action, but this just didn't get there and we we both a bit bored by the end.

The Last Airbender 3D Movie Review

Had heard bad reports about this film, but still fancied seeing it. What a waste of time and money! Yet again for a kids film there is loads of trudging around not actually doing alot, with subtitles down the bottom reminding you where you are every few minutes! There is also lots of cut scene jumping around, sticking in bits of pointless information. When the action gets going however the effects are great and the elements do come alive. However as a whole its a mess of a film, and I can't see the movie studio backing this all the way to the 4th film!

A note on the 2D to 3D conversion for this film - it simply didn't work at all!! It all looked very flat, a complete 3D-con, and if film makers keep trying to convert films filmed in 2D to 3D after they have filmed them (Alice and Clash I'm lookin at you too!), then people are going to become very sick of non-working 3D films very quickly. 3D films need to be filmed in 3D with 3D cameras!!

Piranha 3D Movie Review

If you are expecting anything but B-movie horror from this film, then you are going to be very disappointed. If you are expecting B-movie horror from this film, then you are going to be seriously entertained! Complete B-movie trash all the way through, including some ridiculously over the top deaths, blood, loss of limbs and other piranha induced injuries. The movie also has 3 first for 3D: 3D sick, 3D boobs and 3D willy! In fact a bit too many boobs, but it is an 18 after all! If you want a silly horror that will make you have equal amounts of giggles 'n gore, then Piranha 3D is it!

Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galor 3D Movie Review

We saw the trailer for this at the beginning of Toy Story 3 and it looked quite promising. In reality it was average, but enjoyable kiddy fodder, with a few laugh out loud moments and lots of chuckles. The 3D certainly helped this film.

A-Team Movie Review

We went into the film not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprise to find an action packed, light hearted popcorn epic. They've updated to story from the 80's setting, so now its Iraq, but the gang is all recreated perfectly, with actors slipping into their roles easily. There is an underlying story and the action doesn't let up. Theres not much more to say except we thoroughly enjoyed this film.

This weekend Mark, Carol, Charlotte, Elliot, Gareth and Sarah came to visit and the celebrate Elliot's 1st Birthday (better late than never). The weather as usual was pretty patchy, so we went to see Toy Story 3 again (which was equally as good as the 1st time), built a bear in Build-a-Bear in the mall, played in the playground (for the small time the sun was out) and had a Sunday roastie at the carvery.

Toy Story 3 3D Movie Review

How do you better Toy Story 2? Not by doing Shrek 4 thats for sure, but Toy Story 3 has it! Andy is all grown up and off to college and what turns out to be a mix up for the toys going into the "trash", is actually a turn for the better when the end up in day care, or is it? Another excellent original story from the guys at Pixar, with ideas brimming over. Some funny laugh out moments, some great edge of the seat drama and a very touching ending to a great trilogy. And all in glorious 3D!!

Inception Movie Review

The new film from Chris "Batman" Nolan certainly has some good ideas and some great effects. The basicstory is about DiCaprio, who is a dream invader of sorts and goes on a mind mission to plant and idea in someones mind, however he has his own dark disturbed dreams which interfer. I thought I was going to get lost in this film, as they end up doing dreams in dreams in dreams with "kicks" to jump between dreams, but its handled very well and you do know what is going on at all times. A very unique film and entertainly, unfortunately an obvious ending, which you guess about half way through!

London Comic Con 2010

We always fancied doing a comic book convention, so today we finally went to London for  Comic Con 2010! The convention itself was full of memrobilia from literally anything you could think of from anime to sci-fi and in all forms from printed to full size models. One of the most interesting things about the show was the sheer number of people in cosplay (dressed up as characters). That in itself was worth the £5 admission fee! We were also due to have a photo done with Ben Browder, but the letter with tickets said times hadn't been decided yet, so we were sad to discover that we had missed his photo session when we arrived. However we did go and meet him and get his autograph.

Predators Movie Review

We wanted to enjoy this movie so much, as we like all the Predator and Aliens films. Unfortunately this even makes AVP2 look good. A group of the worst of the worst humans gets transported to the Predator planet for a killing spree, they are the game! However you simply don't believe the characters, considering they are supposed to be the worst human kind has to offer, they just come across as a bit of a bunch of wimps! Brody as an Arnie replacement doesn't cut it either. There is quite a good twist at the end, but not enough to recover the film. Shame.

Shrek Forever After 3D Movie Review

Better than 3 and 1, but still not as good as 2! It had the story, a few laughs, its now in 3D, but its still missing the great soundtrack, piss takes, baddy and action from 2. Time is reset by Rumpelstiltskin and Shrek's friends and family forget him, so he has to re-befriend Donkey, a now fat lazy Puss (as spoiled by the trailers) and Fiona, who is now the leader of the ogre resistance against Rumpel. The supporting cast is there (Gingy, Pinocchio, Pigs, etc...), but are underused, even Cleese and Andrews (King & Queen) are stuck in with a few lines. Its a shame, as with a bit more work and a few more songs, this could have been on par with the greatness of 2.

To fly or not to fly

We arrived at the airport to find out we had a 5.5 hr delay as our plane had a technical fault! So instead of leaving at 21:15 we'd be leaving at 02:45!! As it neared 23:00 we were all gathered up and told our replacement plane had also been grounded. So onto a coach we got again and we're now staying overnight at the 4 star Gran Canaria Princess Hotel. We have to be in reception tomorrow at 10:00 to see if we're coming home anytime soon! Who needs volcanic ash ;-)

When we first arrived, we were a bit dubious, as we were greeted with a prison like entrance complete with barbed wire. However once we were inside things were completely different.
